Passkeys provide a faster, simpler, and more secure way to sign in without using a password. Instead, you authenticate using your device's built-in security, such as Touch ID, Face ID, or a compatible security key. Authentication is handled entirely by your device, making passkeys phishing-resistant and satisfying two-factor authentication (2FA) requirements.
Setting up your Passkey
When you sign in using your username and password, you may be prompted to create a passkey:
- Click the Set up a Passkey button.
- Give the passkey a name so you can recognise it later (e.g. 'MacBook Touch ID').
- Follow the prompts from your device or browser.
- Verify your identity using your device's authentication method (e.g. fingerprint or face recognition).
- Once complete, your passkey will be securely saved on your device.
If you haven't been prompted to create a passkey, you can set this up from your user profile:
- Click your name in the top right of the LMS to go to your User Profile.
- Scroll down to the 'Passkeys' section.
- Click the Add a Passkey button.
Signing in with your Passkey
The next time you sign in:
- Click the Sign in with a Passkey button.
- Verify your identity using your device's authentication method.
You'll be signed in without needing to enter your username, password, or traditional 2FA app.
Passkey FAQs
Is a passkey more secure than a password?
Yes. Passkeys are designed to be phishing-resistant and cannot be stolen in the same way as passwords. They also satisfy two-factor authentication requirements.
Do I still need my password?
Yes. Your username and password remains available as an alternative sign-in method.
What happens if I get a new device?
You can create a new passkey on your new device or, if you use a supported password manager, your passkeys may automatically sync across your devices.
Can I remove my passkey?
Yes. You can remove passkeys at any time from your User Profile by clicking 'Remove' on the relevant passkey.
Does the website have access to my fingerprint or face scan?
No. Your biometric information never leaves your device and is never shared with us. Your device simply confirms that you've successfully authenticated using its built-in security.
